An Introduction to the Five Elements
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — a gentle map TCM uses to understand patterns in body and mind.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) describes the body as a small landscape, shaped by the same forces that shape the natural world. The Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — are not literal materials but a vocabulary for change: how energy rises, peaks, settles, contracts, and rests.
Why a framework of five?
Five gives enough nuance to describe transitions without becoming overwhelming. Each element corresponds to organs, emotions, seasons, flavors, and tissues — a web of associations that helps practitioners notice patterns instead of isolated symptoms.
